Falling pound squeezes retired British expats

Margaret Ditchburn never used to mind the prices at her favorite French-style bistro in this sun-baked seaside resort popular with retired British expatriates.

The 59-year-old retired nurse from drizzly York in northern England would enjoy 50-euro meals of steaks and a bottle of wine with her husband three or four times a week and never give the bill a second thought.

She has to now, with the pound down 17 percent against the euro in a year, falling to 1.24 euros from 1.48 euros due to fears on currency markets that the British economy may slide into recession, and because of higher interest rates in the euro countries than in Britain.
